Episode 9 Setup And Spoiler Warning
SPEAKER_04today we're going to be reviewing episode number nine. I know. The second to last episode ever for now, looking at you, Netflix, of the way home. It is called Ald Lang Zine. And why do I always have a hard time saying that? I don't know how to pronounce it. Is it Ald? Like Ald Lang Zine? I want to say it's in there. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02I don't know.
SPEAKER_04I don't know.
SPEAKER_02I've been singing it wrong all these years.
SPEAKER_04It originally aired on the Hallmark channel on Sunday, June 14th, 2026. And you can find it streaming right now on Hallmark Plus. You can find the first three seasons of The Way Home on Netflix. Netflix, pick it up, please, please, please.
SPEAKER_03Please.
SPEAKER_04And I'm sure I'm sure season four will end up on Netflix as well. Hopefully, fingers crossed.
SPEAKER_02Fingers crossed. This episode was written by Heather Erkonky and directed by Grant Harvey. So let's drop the synopsis.
SPEAKER_04On New Year's Eve, 1925, the Landry and Augustine families' fates converge as Elliot and Kat observe while Alice watches from another time.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. What a time.
SPEAKER_04What a time. What a time we're at.
SPEAKER_02And here we are at that time in our podcast where we want to let you know we're probably going to draw some spoilers. So if you haven't watched it yet.
SPEAKER_04We're not probably. We're going to drop some spoilers.
SPEAKER_02We are going to drop some spoilers. It's just we're we're there now. We're there now. We got one more episode. So if you haven't seen it, stop the podcast. Go watch it. Come back. SPEAKER_04Or just listen to our podcast to get caught up.
SPEAKER_02There you go. You know? That's all you have to do.
SPEAKER_04Of course, we want you to watch it, of course, but you know. So we are going to do a recap and review, and we have been going by um time periods. We've been talking about each time period as a whole until the end. But this episode is so jam-packed, we're going to go um chronologically in which the episode aired. So we are going to be jumping from time period, but we will talk about it.
SPEAKER_02There you go.
SPEAKER_04All right. You ready to get in? We're not even going to do a recap of the last episode. We're going to get right in because we're we're not okay. And we have feelings we're working through. We mentioned that in a video that we did, a short, a short clip. Well, not super short. I guess it was four or five minutes long. But um, all right, let's get to it. We start
1982 Jump Gone Wrong With Fern
SPEAKER_04off this episode in 1982.
SPEAKER_02Two. Yep.
SPEAKER_04It's not 83 yet, right?
SPEAKER_02No.
SPEAKER_04I don't think so. Elliot and Kat are walking on the farm. They have just jumped, and they are hoping to be in 1925.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04As they're walking up to the farmhouse and they see Fern, and she is not 1925 Fern.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_04But 1982 Fern. And they realize they are not in 1925.
SPEAKER_01No, no, no.
SPEAKER_04And because they, of course, are trying to go find Tessa to warn her about her upcoming death in 1925, right?
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04And Elliot wants to save her. So um Elliot wants to jump back, but Kat is like, no, no, we can talk to Fern. She was there in 1925. She knows what happens.
SPEAKER_02She's got the tea, people.
SPEAKER_04She's got the tea. Fern's got the tea. And so they ask her if she remembers the explosions that happened in the mine. And Fern, of course, says, Oh, that's still to come.
SPEAKER_02I know. Is it?
SPEAKER_04And then she says, Oh, such a sacrifice she made.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And immediately we're like, what?
SPEAKER_02Right off the bat, boom, hitch in the face. It's like, whoa.
SPEAKER_04Elliot's eyes get wide.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they do.
SPEAKER_04And then as they're talking, Del and Colton pull up in the driveway, and Kat and Elliot kind of run off to the side, and they watch kind of from the side of the house. And Del and Colton are bringing the baby, baby Kat.
SPEAKER_01Baby cat.
SPEAKER_04And Fern meets Catherine for the first time.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04And Fern looks at her, and Del and Colton are like, hey, or Colton's like, this is Katherine, great grandma, or you know. And she looks at Kat off to the side and she says, Kitty Cat.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And I'm like, oh my gosh, the tears are ready. We can't stand it. It's only like two minutes in.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04What are we doing?
SPEAKER_02Great granddaughter.
SPEAKER_04What are you doing to me? This is about me now, okay?
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01All right.
SPEAKER_04And then Kat and you know, of course, Fern share this look, and it's just so moving, right? Very heartfelt. Yeah. Fern starts to sing. And we looked up the song, and the song is called Beautiful Dreamer. Um, it's the song of a lover serenading a beautiful dreamer who is oblivious to the worldly cares and may actually be dead.
SPEAKER_02Man, wouldn't that be a twist? Oh my god.
SPEAKER_04How do they find these songs? I mean, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, you know, you do re your research. That's what they have these teams for.
SPEAKER_04Right, right.
SPEAKER_02But great, great, great scene.
SPEAKER_04Oh, it's such a fantastic opening. Yes.
Present Day Letters And Pond Secrets
SPEAKER_02Man, they hit the ground running. So then we go back to the present and Jacob is looking through drawers and comes across the letters that were sent to Dell.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_02Hmm.
SPEAKER_04And he sees the one that says, Your lie is known.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_04But doesn't he know? He knows about the letters, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he knows about the letters. He just doesn't know where she put them. So he finds them.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_02Right. So now we're still in the present time.
SPEAKER_04The present time. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And you got Del, Alice, Kat, and Elliot are in the landry kitchen. You know where they always are.
SPEAKER_04They always are.
SPEAKER_02No matter what time period.
SPEAKER_04Hey, the kitchen is the meeting place.
SPEAKER_02The kitchen is the meeting place.
SPEAKER_04It's the heart of the home, usually.
SPEAKER_02And this is where Sam or Del tells uh them that Sam knows about the pond.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_02And it's because Casey told him when she went to go see him in the past, from her future to the past, to ask about, you know, some um legal advice. So there you go.
SPEAKER_04There you go. And um Casey, you know, Elliot and Kat are you know, Elliot more so is a little is very upset. Right. Right? Because doesn't he say something like he's known they've known for two years two years? He's the one who says that, I think. Right. Yeah, he is.
SPEAKER_02Elliot says it.
SPEAKER_04Right. So Elliot's upset. And then Kat and Elliot go off to Kat goes to Elliot.
SPEAKER_02Oh no, wait, before that Jacob comes down with the letter with the letter and says, Whoever wrote this letter, they know about the pond too. And then that's when Kat and Elliot tell tell them all about the New Year's Eve party.
SPEAKER_04Right, right.
SPEAKER_02I jumped ahead and the explosion.
SPEAKER_04And that Tessa is in danger.
SPEAKER_02Correct.
SPEAKER_04Right. So then Kat and Jacob have this nice talk. This is their talk by the fireplace. And Kat is like, I heard, you know, there's a little bit of a like going on with Abby. Caught some feelings. Got some feelings. And um Jacob tries to tell Kat you're not going back, you know, because it's too dangerous. And she says she has to, because you know, she went back to try to save her dad.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04And she knows that Elliot is not gonna let his mom go, so he's going to have to go back. I mean, and they know they go back, right? Because Elliot's basically like with Dell, it it's gonna happen.
SPEAKER_02It's gonna happen one way or the other. I get arrested. I'm the big fish. So yeah, what can I say?
SPEAKER_04So the next morning, Kat goes to Elliot's and base basically tells Elliot, We need to go, we need to jump.
SPEAKER_02Yep, we want no regrets. Try everything for no regrets, is what she says.
SPEAKER_04Right. And then they fast forward to a scene where Dell is picking up a letter off of the kitchen table and she's reading it, and she's not happy because Kat has left a letter that says, We are going to jump. Bye-bye.
SPEAKER_02Bye. And then what does Alice do? She runs off to go.
SPEAKER_04Runs off to go jump. And Del is like, oh okay.
SPEAKER_02She's like, she's like, I'm draining this. I'm draining the pond. As soon as we're done, I'm draining the pond.
SPEAKER_04It's got to go. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So then we're back into 1925. You
1925 Screen Test Plan Revealed
SPEAKER_02got Cliff, Elliot, and Kat. Kat and Elliot talk with Cliff at the Landry house looking for Fern. He tells them she's at her audition filming.
SPEAKER_04She's at her screen test.
SPEAKER_02Screen test, that's it.
SPEAKER_04Yep.
SPEAKER_02And um, which takes place in the Lingomore Manor, mansion, whatever you want to call it.
SPEAKER_04Yep.
SPEAKER_02So then we're still in 1925, and Fern is doing her screening. Kat grabs Fern. She's trying to tell her we got to go because things are gonna go down. And then the famous scene from the from the film where Kat and Fern look at look back at the not at the camera, but off to the side, and they're scared. But guess who it is?
SPEAKER_04It's Grayson going in. It's Grayson, right? We finally see the film scene, the screen test scene.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_04That we've been teased about for it was at the end of last season.
SPEAKER_02I believe so, yeah.
SPEAKER_04When we saw it, right? If if we didn't forgive us, we you know, like our memories aren't that great.
SPEAKER_01No, they're not.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. But we know about this uh this scene and we finally get to see it, which is really cool. Yeah. Shows the fantastic writing and the weaving of the story, but I digress.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_04Um so Kat then tells Fern that Tessa is gonna die, and they cut the screen test, and Grayson is there, and then we find out a big reveal, right? Who else is there?
SPEAKER_02Auntie Coop is in the house. Yeah. So we find out that this is all a plan to get Fern out of the bootlegging business and to save Grace or Coop.
SPEAKER_04Coop out of the I said you said Fern.
SPEAKER_02Fern. I meant Tessa, but it's Coop, whatever. And to get to save Grayson's uh reputation. So there you go.
SPEAKER_04Right, right. And they say there's gonna be a fake explosion, it's gonna look like it because it was gonna be part of the production.
SPEAKER_02Right, right before a production starts, there'll be this fake explosion, right?
SPEAKER_04Real explosion. Well, it's gonna be a real explosion, but a fake death.
SPEAKER_02That's what I meant.
SPEAKER_04And they're gonna get and then Coop will be able to go on, Grayson's reputation will be saved, and all will be well, and they go on with the film, and the film will be funded, and everything's good. And I think it's not funny, but Tessa kind of says Capone's been sniffing me out. And I'm like, is she talking about Al Capone?
SPEAKER_02Right, right.
SPEAKER_04The Alcapone.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. All right, so then we go into 1982.
Alice Meets Griffin At Pond
SPEAKER_02Alice jumps. Griffin takes a picture of her when she's coming out of the water.
SPEAKER_04Another reveal, people. Another reveal. Another re well, I guess not at that point.
SPEAKER_02No, not at that point, but he says, It's true, the pond is magic, and you're a time travel. Drop the mic.
SPEAKER_04Drop the mic. Well, we kind of figured he was gonna find out anyway, since we know he jumps in the pond with Tessa, but right, and I know it's good.
SPEAKER_02I I love how they're doing this because he doesn't know that the pond he can jump yet. But during all the other episodes, he's been jumping, so it's kind of cool. Yeah, how they're wearing this. All right, so we're still in 1982.
SPEAKER_04We think we we think it's not 1983.
SPEAKER_02If it is 1983, well, when was Alison born?
SPEAKER_04Allison.
SPEAKER_02I mean um cat. Cat.
SPEAKER_04You're making up all kinds of names now.
SPEAKER_02You're like she was born in 82, right?
SPEAKER_04I think it was 82, I think, I believe.
SPEAKER_02Right. Okay, so we'll we'll just assume it's 82. 82.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_02If you know, put them down in the comments for us. Yes, get it straight. And you have Griffin and um Alice are still talking. You know, she Alice is trying to get the the camera because she doesn't want to be on these pictures when Tessa comes up with the baby. And this is when we get a picture because Griffin's like, all right, I'm gonna go. And as he turns to walk away, he turns back and clicks the picture that we've all been seeing all along with her cut out of it, with Alice cut out of it.
SPEAKER_04But it's a picture of Tessa with the baby at the pond. Yes, yes, without Alice in it.
SPEAKER_02Without Alice in it. But now we know Alice was the one that was there and was torn out of the picture. We just don't know who tore her out of that picture.
SPEAKER_04Well, at one point, doesn't Colton tear one of the pictures or no?
SPEAKER_02He tears the one within the kitchen picture.
SPEAKER_04Okay, which we'll get to later. Okay, okay, gotcha. Sorry.
SPEAKER_02All right, so where are we at now?
Jacob And Abby Face Tunnel Trauma
SPEAKER_04So then Tessa, I think before we go to the present day, Tessa in that moment, um, Griffin goes away. And Tessa asks Alice to walk home with her because she really is searching for some comfort, right? You know, and you can really see it on her face, and we kind of know what's sort of coming, but um, she asks Alice, and Alex, Alice is like, sure, you know. So then we get we go to the present day, Jacob and Abby are at the point, and Abby's really excited because she's having the launch party for her family's new wine vineyard champs, champagne, or whatever.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04And she's talking about the launch party, and you know, everyone's gonna be there, and she really wants Jacob to come, you know, and he's like, I might come, you know, maybe. And she kind of gets excited, and then she starts saying, Well, you know, it's so exciting, they're gonna be throwing the party in the tunnels, and and his face really changes because of the history of the tunnels, and Jacob was a little bit beaten almost to death there. Got that PTSD, so he's got a little little, you know, little PTSD about that, which everybody would. And so his face changes, and now he's not sure how he's gonna get out of it because he doesn't want to go back to the tunnels, right? But he loves Abby, yes, he does.
SPEAKER_02So then we go back to 82, 83, 84, one of those years.
SPEAKER_0482.
SPEAKER_02We'll just say Tessa and Alice, right? So Tessa envies Griffin and Alice, they're walking to the house, isn't this where they're walking? And um, she's kind of envy because Griffin and Alice can come and go as they please. But this is where you start to notice she's kind of sounding depressed, and maybe he's got that postpartum depression.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And um then Evelyn shows up, and Tessa is supposed to be babysitting Lewis, so she's a little late.
SPEAKER_04But it's oh Tessa Tessa's late showing up to babysit, is that she means Evelyn's baby. Yeah, but Evie just showed up. I mean Evelyn had just gotten there, right?
SPEAKER_02I know, but it made it seem like, did you forget?
SPEAKER_04You know, right, right.
SPEAKER_02But they showed up around the same time.
SPEAKER_04I think it's important, really important to talk about here. Like you mentioned, Tessa is basically saying, you know, she's not sure about this whole motherhood thing. And Alice is like, you know, being a mom must be really hard. And she says, you know, yeah, no one tells you that. They all act like it's perfect and it's magical. And she doesn't feel that way about being a mother. And she obviously has this postpartum depression, and she's like, you know, it comes so easy to Dell. And I think that's so true. And I think, you know, and of course, this was a time before people were really talking about it. Right. We're talking about postpartum depression, we're acting like it was a real thing. You're just supposed to suck it up and be happy. You have this beautiful baby, and why aren't you happy? You know, so that was it was a different time. And I I think, you know, in a lot of ways, that really parallels now with all the social media and everything seemingly perfect. You know, you have these teenagers and these young parents growing up, and they're showing, you know, perfection online when we all know it's not really that way.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04Um, I know a lot of people show the real side of motherhood now, but you know, not everyone gets hits the ground running once they have a baby, you know.
SPEAKER_01It's a lot of people.
SPEAKER_04I mean, I personally never went through postpartum, but I know it's very real. You know, I had friends who did, and it's very serious.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it is. I agree.
SPEAKER_04And when you feel like people aren't not necessarily supporting you, but are basically like, you know, we always talk about this. Viola Davis has has the quote that we use a lot where it's like, you know, people tell you you just gotta suck it up and pull yourself up by your bootstraps. But what if you don't have a boot?
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04What if you don't have anything to hold on to? And I think that's where Tessa is now, and I think it's really, really well done in this episode and in this um series, in this season in particular.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And we got a little hint of it when she was pregnant when he said she couldn't sleep, and you know, and Tessa tries to play it off, like, oh, you know, it's fine, I'll be fine. She she thinks she has to, it has to be perfect, it has to be magical. And so anyway, I just wanted to chat about that for a minute.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_02So now we head back to this episode. All right. So we head back to 1925. Tessa and Elliot are at the house that Elliot grew up in in that crate. And in this scene, I thought it was pretty cool because it's not their house yet.
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_02It was um right.
SPEAKER_04Doesn't it say for sale or no?
SPEAKER_02Yes, it does say for sale, and it belongs to the Augustines at in that time period. And Tessa and Tessa wants to buy it so she can have her boys, and she's talking about the Augie boys at this point.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I thought the Augustines didn't own it. No, they did.
SPEAKER_02They did. They it belonged to the Augustines in that time period, but they've gone bankrupt and sold the house. So maybe it wasn't theirs, but they owned it. They built it, they lost it, and it's sitting there for sale, yes.
SPEAKER_04Right. Okay, because she says Susanna Augustine built it.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_04And then they fell on hard times and they had to sell it, right? So it left the Augustine family, and Tessa now, you're right, she wants to buy, she calls them her boys, right? Her her crew, yeah, her bootlegging crew.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I thought it was cool because um Tessa likes that Elliot and Kat are a thing, that they fell in love. Yeah, and it was just a great conversation between the two, and she tells Elliot that um she's gonna go home with them, and you know, pretty much nothing's gonna stop.
SPEAKER_04Right. So and he's very emotional in that moment because he's like home home, homeware. Home what you know, so yeah. It's it's a great scene.
SPEAKER_02Yes, it is.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, they were all and then we go to present day.
Danny Confesses To The Letters
SPEAKER_04Jacob it has gone to see Danny, he's at Danny's house, and he really is going there just to bounce, you know, how he feels about Abby off.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, get some advice, yeah.
SPEAKER_04And get some advice. Yeah, he wants to move on from the past, but he's not sure how. You know, and Jacob is like, I appreciate your friendship. And Jacob offers to run the farm with. Danny as an equal partner.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04Which I thought was pretty cool, you know. And and Danny's kind of like, really? Like you you want to do that for like he can't believe it almost. Right. Right. And then, you know, we find out something later. But so Danny goes to get a drink, and Jacob kind of walks into the dining room and he sees a typewriter, and there is a weird N there. And it is the same weird typed N that is on the threatening letters that were not threatening, but well, I guess kind of threatening letters that were sent to Dell.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_04Like, I know you're living a lie or whatever. And now he knows that Danny is the one who's done that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And Jacob leaves. Danny comes out, sees the typewriter, and knows. Now he knows that Danny knows that it was him.
SPEAKER_02Oh Danny boy. Oh, Danny boy.
SPEAKER_04Then we have a hop quickly back to 1983. Colton and Griffin are arguing in the barn/slash stable area because Colton has seen Griffin getting closer to Tessa and he does not like that. No, he does not. And he tells Griffin to leave Tessa alone. And Griffin says he came to see the baby. What's the freaking problem?
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_04Right. And so they're arguing.
SPEAKER_02And he storms out. Now we hit 1925. You got Ellie and Kat.
SPEAKER_04Wait, hold please. In that last scene in 1983, Alice is there, right?
SPEAKER_02Yes, Alice is there.
SPEAKER_04She hears them, she hears the argument. Okay, guess what?
SPEAKER_02Yes, she's hiding behind the door. Or she's hiding outside, and before Griffin comes out, she runs behind the door when he opens it. Right. She's hidden.
SPEAKER_04That's right. Okay.
SPEAKER_02Now we go into 1925. We have Ellie and Kat. They're walking back up the Landry Driveway. When Cliff and Fern come busting out of the door, hugging and kissing.
SPEAKER_04They're smooching. They're smooching on the porch.
SPEAKER_02And he's twirling around. And this is a great, great, great scene. They confess their love to each other. Cliff gets down on one knee and he says, Fern, make me a happy man. Marry me. And she says, Yes. Oh, that was such a perfect scene.
SPEAKER_04I know. And I love when he says, I can't, or he says, Um, I can't wait to catch you. Like she belongs there at the farm, and he can't wait to come home for her, and he can't wait to catch her. She's a star. She's had so much grief in her life. She's had, you know, and things are finally turning, and she's like, I can't wait to be caught. And I'm like, that's so good. And then he proposes.
SPEAKER_02And I I love the part where he says, It's no emerald, it's real.
SPEAKER_04It's no emerald. Right. It's not like the big, right, right, right. Oh, wow. He's a man of modest means. Right.
SPEAKER_02And then he said he's gonna go to the party whether he was invited or not. Yes, he was gonna kiss his gal at midnight.
SPEAKER_04His gal.
SPEAKER_02I love it. And then this is when Kat says to Elliot, that's they're watching behind the car, and and Kat kind of turns to Elliot and says, And that's how you do it. And then Elliot's like, he turns Kat, pushes over against the car and lays a big one on her.
SPEAKER_04Lays a big one on her. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02What a great scene.
SPEAKER_04And Fern, you know, she tells Cliff that um she's never loved anyone that the way that she loves him. And you always know when someone says that, it's no good. Hello.
SPEAKER_02Hello. It's like in Star Trek, you wear that red shirt, you're doing you're a gonna don't be wearing a red shirt.
SPEAKER_04Oh my goodness.
SPEAKER_02All right. So we're still back in 1925.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_02And Ferns talks to Cliff about Grayson's party. Is he going? Um cat's the uh cat wants him to know Elliot tells the truth.
SPEAKER_04Wait a minute, wait a minute. Fern talks to Cliff. Kat talk Cliff talks to Cliff. Okay, let's get this straight. Okay, back up.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so uh Kat is up to Cliff, who's sitting on the porch and tries to convince him that Elliot is a good person. And he's like, Oh, you mean Tom Buchanan didn't lie? And so he goes, she goes and says, Look, it's all to protect Fern. And Cliff's kind of like, okay, well, if you if it's about Fern, then I'm all in. And that's all that it was about is keeping Fern safe. And as Allison is Kat is walking away, names are hard for you tonight.
SPEAKER_04Today, yeah, no, I don't know what it is.
SPEAKER_02Okay, as Kat is leaving, is leaving talking, she hears a sound like somebody moved and stepped on a twig and it cracked, and she turns to her left, but thinks nothing of it and then walks off. But you have a great theory about it.
SPEAKER_04Who well, I'm like, who is watching her? Right? Is it is Fern watching from the side?
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_04Is could it be Alice watching from someone? I think someone has tipped their toes in the pond and is watching them. But the question is did Kat really not think anything of it, or did she see who it was and then kept walking?
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04Because she's not going to disturb that part because she's on her path, and that person whose time traveling is obviously on theirs. That's what I think. Anywho, hopefully we'll find out next episode.
SPEAKER_01All right.
SPEAKER_04And then we go to present day, and Elliot is looking at the letters in the kitchen, and Danny comes over and he says, drum roll, he wrote the letters.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And then we immediately go a long time ago.
SPEAKER_04Yes, you did. Yes, you did say that. You were right about that. And then we um and then we get to we that's all that scene is. Then we go to 1982, and Alice is running towards Vic and Tessa's house, and you hear baby Elliot's crying. The smoke alarm is going off. And Alice is like, Tessa, Tessa, and she runs into the house. And when Alice runs into the house, Tessa comes around from around the corner of the house with Lewis. And Lewis is about I would say, yeah.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. Probably around a seven, eight, nine, ten. Yeah, somewhere in there.
SPEAKER_04I'm sure we should know the year he was born, but we don't. People, it's fine. He's he's a child still. Yes, he is. But Tessa then sees Aliot or Aliot. I just combined Alice and Alice.
SPEAKER_00You're having just a you're having just a his heart of a gosh, it's like Bennifer Ben Affleck and that was funny.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Okay, what was I saying? Alice. So Alice comes in. So no, Alice. Tessa sees Alice and Elliot. Alice is holding Elliot as a baby and the baby's screaming. And Tessa's kind of like freaked out a little bit, and Alice is like, it's okay, he's okay. You know, it's gonna be okay, and hands her the baby. And then she Alice has to run off because Evie's pulling up in the driveway.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04And because Evie is there to now pick up Lewis, whom Tessa is supposed to have been babysitting. Right. And Evie gets out of the car with a little bit of an attitude. She's mad because she sees Tessa outside with the baby, and Lewis is standing there. And Tessa's like, I'm so sorry. I fell asleep. I went to find Lewis, who was by the pond. And you know, Evie's like, You left the baby. Oh my god, you're the worst mother ever. And Tessa just she realizes in that moment she she tried to make some toast or something, right? The toast is burning, and that is what's causing the alarm to go off. And you can see it in her face that she now, now we're realizing as the audience that she left to protect Elliot.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_04Because she from herself herself as a threat.
SPEAKER_02From herself.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, to protect Elliot from herself because she is is clearly not okay and she doesn't want to end up hurting him.
SPEAKER_02No, she does not.
SPEAKER_04Right. So that was another just really powerful scene, I think, in all of it. Sure, well. If you just take the time to listen, and I understand Evie being upset, you know, it's her son. And then Tessa also says that Lewis was by the pond.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_04Did Lewis jump?
SPEAKER_02We don't know. He wasn't wet.
SPEAKER_04How long was she asleep?
SPEAKER_02And how long was he at the pond? So there's a lot of is the time the same.
SPEAKER_04He wasn't wet, I don't think.
SPEAKER_02No, he wasn't.
SPEAKER_04So did somebody else pop up? We don't know. Did somebody else pop up and Lewis saw somebody else pop up in the pond? We don't know.
SPEAKER_02We'll find out because we only have one episode left.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_02So then we go back to the present time, and Danny tells the reason why he sent the hateful letters. Because one day he saw he was cleaning out the barn, he was helping with the Landry farm, and he overheard Alice and Kat arguing about Jacob. This is when Alice found Jacob for the first time, and that he was in prison and he was being whipped. And but Danny doesn't know this. He just uh he just starts to realize, oh my god, he's alive, they're hiding him. And he was kind of used as the scapegoat. And so he wasn't missing. He waited for them to tell the truth. They never did, and that's why he sent the letter. Dell apologizes. Um, Jacob says, I'll I'm gonna tell you the truth, but you're probably not gonna believe me. And they hug it out, and yeah, that too was such a great scene because I'm so glad it wasn't some crazy reason why he was doing it.
SPEAKER_04Well, and it makes sense because even after Jacob was found, right? You know, they continued the lie that he must have thrown the stuffed animal over the cli or whatever, you know, and that's why Jacob disappeared. And so I think that's why Danny was so upset because he'd already lived with it for 20 years, and they, you know, now to be fair, they didn't know he was alive that whole time. No, it wasn't like they ate it the whole time, but Danny doesn't know that. Yep, but he lived with that guilt, you know, and you grow up with that from being a child that's very hard to reconcile very traumatic, you know, and then you grow up as an adult traumatized, and you can kind of understand as an adult that it's not your fault, but you've grown up for 20 years thinking it was. I mean, that's a really big mind.
SPEAKER_02That's a burden to hold on to, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. So, and I like that Jacob just has forgiveness in his heart, yeah. You know, and he's like, they know they were wrong also. Yeah, so they're you know, forgiving him in that moment, and then Jacob's like, I'm gonna tell you, but it's not gonna be, you know, you're not probably not gonna believe me, but we're gonna try, you know.
SPEAKER_02So that's one of those stories you have to show, not to Yes.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, well, yeah, I don't know. We'll see.
SPEAKER_02All right.
New Year’s Eve Party Tension Builds
SPEAKER_02So now we're back to 1925.
SPEAKER_04Right. And Fern and Kat and Elliot are ready for the New Year's Eve party. And isn't the 1920s just the costuming they got to do is so fun. You know, aside from the seriousness of the show, but it's just, you know, the flapper stuff and the, you know, and the I don't know. Just I love it. I love it, love it, love it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So Fern says she's already broken it off with Grayson. Yep. And but she's wearing Grayson's ring for now as show.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_04Right. So they can continue to get the funding for the filming and the film can go on. And correct. You know, and then Fern kind of goes off, and Kat is really upset because Fern is so happy because she's in love with Cliff, everything's gonna be fine, you know, and 1926 is the time of dreams, or whatever she says, you know, and and and Kat knows that none of what Fern is thinking is going to happen is going to happen. Right. And she knows that Fern is in for some hurt, and um, you know, it's gotta be hard because you want to change the future, but then you would change everything else, and yeah.
SPEAKER_02So then we go back to the present. And then here's a party at Colton's house. Or is it no, this is um 1982. So party at Colton's house. You got Vic, you got Colton, you got Tessa, Evelyn, Del Tessa isn't there at first. She's not there at first, but she ends up there. Alice is watching. Vic is worried about Tessa because she's not present. Uh Griffin gave and we find out who gave uh Tessa the bracelet.
SPEAKER_04The bracelet.
SPEAKER_02It's none other than Griffin. Griffindor.
SPEAKER_04And Vic isn't real happy about that.
SPEAKER_02No, I wouldn't be happy either.
SPEAKER_04Vic Vic is not happy about that, but we get to that in a little bit.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_04Right. So um Vic is telling Colton that Tessa hasn't been herself, and it's like she's not really here. Now Colton thinks it's Griffin's fault.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_04It's really not, it's the postpartum depression, right? Um, but Colton is blaming Griffin and you know, basically like looking at Griffin with you know he thinks Griffin is the distraction, but it's not, it's the depression. So um then Tessa shows up. Then we go to the present day, and Jacob and Dell are kind of you know, talking about their mistakes, talking about their mistakes, and Jacob is ignoring Abby's call, and Del encourages him, you know. She knows why it's hard for him to go to the party, but she is encouraging him to overcome it and go for Abby's sake.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04It's basically where they're at. And and Jacob is having flashbacks of his torture during that time.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04Then we go back to 1925. It is the New Year's Eve party. And Elliot and Kat overhear Grayson and the movie producers talking about an explosion for the movie, but they know it happens on New Year's Eve. So they're figuring out that Tessa lied about going home with Elliot, and she's doing the job that night.
SPEAKER_02Yep. Down in the catacombs.
SPEAKER_04Yep. And then the undercover cop is at the party, the the man who is the undercover cop, and he recognizes Elliot slash Tom, and he's like, You're not getting away again. He grabs Tom, he cuffs him, and that's when the photographer takes the picture of Tom slash Elliot.
SPEAKER_02Buchanan.
SPEAKER_04Tom Buchanan.
SPEAKER_02The big fish.
SPEAKER_04The big fish. And that's the picture that Elliot had seen when he was doing research when he realized it was him. And they head outside. They're going to he's going to arrest him, and Kat is with him. And they run into Cliff, who has now shown up at the party. And Cliff is like, well, well, well. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02That's so funny. And that's so 20s.
SPEAKER_04Well, I think Kat isn't with him at that moment, right?
SPEAKER_02No, because it cuts to another scene in 1925 where Fern tells Kat that the big fish was just caught. And Kat's like, the big fish is Elliot.
SPEAKER_04It was Elliot.
SPEAKER_02It was Elliot. And and um, so Kat tells Grayson and Fern that it's happening tonight, that the explosion or the not the explosion, but the the drop, the bootlegging has happened tonight. So Grayson gives his gun to her, and there's another reveal and shows her a door that leads down into the catacombs.
SPEAKER_04Right. But first we have to say Elliot fesses up to Cliff when he sees him outside while he's handcuffed, and he's begging Cliff to let him go. He says, you know, he's her son. He doesn't want to take her anywhere, he just wants to say goodbye.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_04He just wants the chance. Cliff allows him to go, but he and the undercover, well, maybe not the undercover, I don't know where they understand.
SPEAKER_02No, it was the it was the undercover cop.
SPEAKER_04Oh, that's right. They follow Elliot to find out where he's going.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So now we're back at the present time. And there's a lot of stuff going on. Yes. So Dale, go ahead.
SPEAKER_04Um, I was gonna say that Kat, we do see before that happens that Kat goes to the tunnels with the gun.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04Right? She's she has the gun, she goes down into the tunnels, and then we go to present day and we are in the tunnels. We are in the
Parallel Tunnel Parties And Big Reveals
SPEAKER_04catacombs, which again, the shooting of the parallels, the parallel timelines of being in the same place is just so good.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_04Um we're at the tunnel party that Abby is throwing, and the podcast lady who I don't know her name, Del's friend, yeah, and Del are talking, and Abby doesn't have a signal, and she's trying to get a hold of Jacob. Then Abby gives her speech, but Jacob's not there, and then Jacob shows up, and Lewis is mad that Jacob has shown up because Jacob was gonna burn down his vineyard. That sums that up in a little bit. And then that's when Jacob basically professes his love for Abby. And Abby does the same thing, and Lewis is like incredulous. Abby does the same, and then Lewis is like, you're in love with a Landry. Dun dun dun, you know, and then he says the family that's been blackmailing us for two years. Abby had no idea, gets mad, goes off.
SPEAKER_02And cutscene.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_02So now we're back into 82.
SPEAKER_04Woo! Let it go. Tainted love and tainted love. The original song.
SPEAKER_02Yes, the real song. Abby was talking to Tessa. He wants a picture of him, Tessa, and Colton. And here's the picture. Right? So the picture gets taken. Vic asks Tessa where she got the bracelet. And this is when all crap breaks loose.
SPEAKER_04Right. Now, this is the pit the infamous picture is Colton, Dell, Tessa, and then Griffin. And Griffin is the one who Colton tore off. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yep, there we go. Um, and Griffin tells him that he gave it to her, and Vic kind of goes off a little bit. It's like, stay away from my wife, and oh man.
SPEAKER_04Yes. And Colton kicks Griffin out.
SPEAKER_02Well, Griffin, not before Griffin tells Colton that Evelyn has a crush on him.
SPEAKER_04Evelyn's in love with you.
SPEAKER_02So everybody's spilling the tea.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we're spilling the tea. Nobody gets mad.
SPEAKER_02She doesn't. But Dell already knew because Evelyn said it's not true. And she goes, Yes, it is. I know. So she was kind of good with that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So there you go.
SPEAKER_04And then we go to a scene in 1925. Kat's in the tunnel. Tessa takes the gun from Kat. Kat is trying to tell her that there's going to be an explosion. We need to get out of here.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_04And then it goes back to 1982, and what you just mentioned happened. Evie tries to, you know, to say that Griffin was lying. Del's like, no, no, he's not, but it's okay.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_04And then Evie spills what happened with Tessa with Tessa and the baby. And, you know, Vic kind of gets upset, obviously, about the occurrence of that. And then Fern comes downstairs and says, This is how it begins, Coop. Tell you how it ends, right? Or I'll tell you how it ends. I'll tell you how it ends. You're going to kill your son. And I'm like, the beginning is the end. The end is the beginning. Remember when she was saying that?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yep.
SPEAKER_04Oh, it's so good.
SPEAKER_02And then we get back to 2020 or 1925, and Elliot makes it down to the tunnels, and he tries to get them all to leave when Cliff and the undercover cops show up.
SPEAKER_04Yes. And Cliff is like, freeze. He has walked into it. And then they go back to the present day.
SPEAKER_02This back and forth made me dizzy.
SPEAKER_04And the podcaster, her friend, and Jacob are leaving the tunnels. And this is where the friend says that she didn't even get to pitch her podcast about the explosion in the tunnels.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04Because there's so many deaths. And Jacob's like, there was only one. And she says four bodies were identified and one was never found.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04The song is just a tale that came down. Right. So now we know four people died and only one came out. Now, at one point, I will say, and maybe I said it on this podcast, maybe I didn't, that I thought four died.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04Because I thought that I had heard that in an episode.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think you did.
SPEAKER_04However, I did not cling to that. And at this point, I was convinced that four survived. But I am gonna say on the record that I did think that at one point.
SPEAKER_01And you're on the record.
SPEAKER_04I don't know why. And I thought I just misunderstood the song or whatever. Right. So I had talked myself out of that.
SPEAKER_01But you sure did.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but I didn't stick with it. I was now on the four survived one died because we were trying to figure out who died. All right. So Jacob runs off. Where is he going? Is he going to jump? Is he going to go try to find them and tell them? We don't know.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_04We don't know where he's going.
SPEAKER_02Yep. And then now we get the 1925.
SPEAKER_04Oh,
Gunshot And Explosion Countdown
SPEAKER_04this is so good.
SPEAKER_02Bern is waiting outside with Grayson and their guests.
SPEAKER_04Well, no, the whole party is outside.
SPEAKER_02Right. Because they're they're about to count down. Grayson starts the actually starts the countdown. Tessa points the gun because now we're down in the catacombs at Cliff. And then Kat kind of steps in front, but there's a whole bunch of yelling going on between all of them. And then Tessa pulls the trigger, and as soon as she does, Elliot pushes Kat out of the way and takes it for the team.
SPEAKER_04So Elliot is now shot in the tunnels. But, and then so it's right after he gets shot, right? Then they go back to fern singing. She starts to sing all langsine. And then they show Elliot in the tunnel. He's on the ground. He's got blood coming out of what looks like maybe his shoulder area.
SPEAKER_02And this is slow motion now.
SPEAKER_04Everything is slow motion. And so she's singing. Then they show the cop. One cop has cuffed Tessa.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04The other bootlegger tries to tackle Cliff. They knock a lantern over and it's got oil in it, and it kind of seeps down, and there's shots of Fern singing. The lantern has the oil, it's leaking towards the dynamite. And every person in the tunnel, now Kat has dragged Elliot somewhere.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Right? She's like, we have to go. And there's a moment at the end where they all sort of stop what they're doing. Cliff, the bootlegger, the undercover cop, and Tessa, and they know that there's about to be an explosion.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04And that would be the longest 10 seconds of your life, probably. And then they go back to Fern singing. Fern singing.
SPEAKER_02And it ends.
SPEAKER_04Well, and there's an explosion.
SPEAKER_02And then a boom.
SPEAKER_04There's a big boom. Now the fireworks are going off still. But there appears to be some sort of explosion.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Appears to be. And both Grayson and Fern have this concerned look on their face, but they're still Well, Fern had started while they were standing out there, she's running through her head how Cliff said he was going to show up. He had to kiss his girl at midnight. As they're counting down, they're they're kind of playing um Cliff, and you know, and she you can tell she's kind of thinking about him and she's curious and she's wondering, and she's a smart girl, and she's sort of putting two and two together, I think, in that moment.
SPEAKER_02Yep. What a scene. Oh so hats off to that scene, that back and forth. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_04It was so well shot and so well done and so well edited together. That final scene was just I mean, I think we didn't speak for a few minutes at the event because we were like, so the question is do they all die? Do we think anyone died?
SPEAKER_02I don't know. I don't know if they found the body.
SPEAKER_04We think Elliot survives.
SPEAKER_02Right. Well, the interesting thing is they didn't write about the explosion in the paper.
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_02So what happened?
SPEAKER_04Right. What happens there? Did they not write about it? Because Grayson, he owns the paper at that time, right? So does he not say anything about it because he doesn't want to bring attention to it?
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_04I mean, just because they found bodies doesn't mean it's their bodies.
SPEAKER_02Correct. And maybe Fern.
SPEAKER_04Or is it just us holding on to hope that Cliff has survived because Dan Janot in this, he is so good in this. I'm so bummed he only got one season.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_04So bummed.
SPEAKER_03I know.
SPEAKER_04And Fern, too. The actress who plays Fern, Bianca, I think is her name. I want more of them in the 20s.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I'm just 20s, 30s, 40s. I want it all.
SPEAKER_04It's not okay. But but but the end that end scene was was just it was just so good.
SPEAKER_02It was off the charts.
SPEAKER_01It was off the charts.
SPEAKER_04So do we think that I mean, if something happens, you know, we gotta go back to Casey. Who is she? How does she fit in? She's a she's a good one. Is she a descendant of Max's? Is she maybe Max's daughter?
SPEAKER_02Or somebody's granddaughter? I don't know.
SPEAKER_04Or granddaughter, because Casey says that Sam and Al and um Dell are prominent in her life. So Casey has to be born pretty soon after that.
SPEAKER_02Well, maybe she was adopted by Sam and Del, and somebody left her on the porch.
SPEAKER_04That could be too.
SPEAKER_02Because she's kind of maybe that's how it ends. Like Elliot was left, maybe she was left. I don't know.
SPEAKER_04Well, and don't forget, she said, I I want to see this before everything changes. I wanted to see what it was like before everything changes. So what is the everything changes? And then we have the opening scene from the very first episode where Kat and Del and Alice are at the pond, and Al and uh Kat is like, I wish he were here to see this. And Del says he sees everything or something like that.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04And then Alice is like, you know, it's time for the I do's. So who is getting married? I think it's gonna be Del and Sam.
SPEAKER_02Well, what the interesting thing is, is that remember, Jacob runs off. So does he run off to go jump? And maybe it's him that's lost now? We don't know. Just putting it out there for the next one.
SPEAKER_04Or maybe, maybe he makes it back and he saves everybody.
SPEAKER_02Everybody, that's a good point.
SPEAKER_04Maybe he is because he goes to jump.
SPEAKER_02Right, right, right, right.
SPEAKER_04Does he make it back in time?
SPEAKER_02Yep. To save it. Maybe it was Jacob that was there that made the stick noise. Ooh.
SPEAKER_04Made the stick noise. Oh, in the bushes.
SPEAKER_02In the bushes.
SPEAKER_04He might have been. It might have been him. So he might have been trying to figure out how to prevent it. But but then the show always says what's gonna happen is gonna happen. And Fern has ended up the way she is. So if Cliff does end up being dead, is she pregnant then? Right. And that's how the the line carries on.
SPEAKER_01I don't know.
SPEAKER_04And so they're Landry's because he's no longer around, so they're given the Landry last name. Yep. Colton, or well, Colton's and Griffin's parents, or mom and dad.
SPEAKER_02She dad. Right. Right.
SPEAKER_04It'd have to be the dad, I guess, because I don't know. Yeah, it's there's so many, there's so it's just I can't wait to find out though. I have to say there are just so many more avenues they could go. There's so much more story to tell. There's so many more ideas, and it is just, and I'm I'm always when we're invested in a show, we're always sad when something ends. And it's such a bummer, especially when it's good writing like this, when you know. Now, like we've said before, if it's a the creatives behind it, like we're gonna do five seasons, we've always known we're gonna do five seasons, here's gonna be the arc, and they kind of know right that's one thing. But if it's not their own decision, which I kind of think this wasn't, we don't have inside information. We have no idea how it all went down. I mean, obviously, you know, it's a business. Yeah, it's a business too, so the numbers have to be there, but it is just really so well written, so well edited, you know, and for a show on homework, yeah.
SPEAKER_02I know it's I mean this is top level right here.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I mean, it could be if you move it to you know Netflix, you can do other things that aren't homearky, right?
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_04Which I don't necessarily need. I love it as it is. I'm just saying that for a show like this to be this well done, um, you know, maybe production costs were too high. I mean, I have no idea, no clue. But but it is disappointing if if it wasn't the creatives behind the show, if it wasn't, you know, them that wanted to end it.
SPEAKER_02Um if it was Hallmark, it's a little disappointing, but there's nothing you can do other than ask Hallmark to save it and if you have to put it on Netflix.
SPEAKER_04Well, that ship has sailed. I think this raft, I don't even know how long ago, right? You know, at least six months ago, maybe I I can't remember for sure when when filming wrapped, and um, you know, the actors go on to other projects, it's just the nature of the business. And so now, you know, you kind of the train has left the station and to get everybody back together. And you know, we we understand that. We still hope Netflix picks it up, but you know, we'll see.
Predictions Ratings And Farewell
SPEAKER_04Uh we'll see. So, favorite moment in this episode.
SPEAKER_02That whole fern singing, yes, and the and the catacomb scene at the same time. That's my favorite. Yes, the realization on the face of it for the whole series. That one scene was the best scene.
SPEAKER_04Maybe it's fake dynamite, and it's actually the fireworks going on. It's fake dynamite for the movie production.
SPEAKER_02That's what I'm saying. Maybe they pulled one over. Maybe, maybe they had a fake on a fake, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I don't know, but it's so sad. My favorite moment would be that moment also. We had so many reveals in this episode. It was so great to get a lot of those answers. Um, you know, I just wish we could discover Griffin more. I wish we could see more about Tessa and what she went through to get to that point. And I I really, yeah, I could go on. Who's the character of the week for you?
SPEAKER_02I have two. And it's Tessa and Fern. Yeah. Because they had the most emotional scenes, yeah. And they did a really good job. Both of them did. So I'm putting them together.
SPEAKER_04I have to add Cliff. I think it's Tessa. Cliff, too. Oh my god. I just I just think the three of them. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I love Cliff scene.
SPEAKER_04And I kind of kind of dig in that Grayson ended up not being a terrible.
SPEAKER_02Well, we've been saying that. We've been saying that.
SPEAKER_04Although he could still turn in the last episode, but I kind of am digging that.
SPEAKER_02I think he was just more concerned about his image. Yeah. So he wasn't really a bad guy. He was just, you know, whatever.
SPEAKER_04Oh, one more episode.
SPEAKER_02You guys ready for it?
SPEAKER_04It's a bittersweet.
SPEAKER_02I want to watch it, but I don't want to watch it.
